The bronze series began late 2010 beginning with the "Singer". The original hand built clay head was pit fired at the Hui here on Maui. It was one of those pieces that I kept in my studio because I enjoyed its energy. My good friend, Stephanie Sachs, suggested that I have it reproduced in bronze since I had had several clients/friends desiring this particular face. After that I added "Dimples", followed by "Prayer", etc. I continue making the clay faces every week and when a special face emerges, perhaps that will be the next bronze. My bronzes are produced in Oregon at the Valley Bronze Foundry. Slim applies the wonderful patinas that makes each one unique.

Hand built, one of a kind pieces.  Each face starts as a simple pinch pot.  Through years of experiencing in clay, a face emerges that may speak to the viewer.

My birds have changed from the "Audubon" style to a very free minimal form with lots of attitude.

Feet are so symbolic in many cultures: transcendance, purification, and the little "pillows" we love to touch.  I love my Yoga toes!

These vessels are influenced by many Asian cultures: both form and glazes.

Each one unique, hand built with stoneware and/or porcelain and high fired in a gas kiln.

With all the monks in my studio, I must have some female forms to balance the space.  Subtle suggestions within the vessels give a feeling of femininity and grace.

During the last firing, I add found beach glass to the vessel.  It is always such a surprise to see what "jewels" appear, each one unique, reminding us of the beautiful waters in Maui.

In this series I am exploring organic forms.  This pod-like vessel may contain various items: faces, vessels, fruit, birds, etc.

Along this journey, I continue my passion of glazing: experimenting with new formulas, interations of glazes, oxides and glass.

I pinch myself everyday. How did I get to lucky to live in Maui and be a potter. Does life get any better?
